“There is no need to be unhappy. There is no need to be sad. There is no need to be disappointed, or oppressed, or aggrieved. There is no need for illness or failure or discouragement. There is no necessity for anything but success, good health, prosperity, and an abounding interest and joy in life.” Emmet Fox
Here is the formula for applying The Method in your life: “But rather seek ye first the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
This formula represents the broad strokes. The specifics, the actual technique can be described in two parts, Affirmations and Treatment.
In the early part of the twentieth century the New Thought movement presented this as performing a Treatment.
“A prayer treatment is a form of prayer based upon right thinking, namely thinking of God the Good. A vehicle through which healing is achieved.” (Emmet Fox)
The principle of treatment, states Emmet Fox, is to “stop thinking about the problem and think only about God’s perfect world.” A treatment deals first with states of mind, then with the situation or condition to be healed.
Traditionally, a Treatment within the New Though Movement or Christian Science would be as follows:
“God is fully present here with me, now. God is the only real Presence, all the rest is but a shadow. God is perfect Good, and God is the cause only of perfect Good. The same fountain cannot send forth both sweet and bitter water. God never sends sickness, trouble, accident, temptation, nor death itself; nor does He authorize these things. I am divine spirit. I am a child of God. In God I live and move and have my being; so I do not fear. I am surrounded by the Presence of God and all is well. I am not afraid of the past; I am not afraid of the present; I am not afraid of the future; for God is with me. The Eternal God is my dwelling place and underneath are the everlasting arms. Nothing can touch me but the direct action of God Himself, and God is Love.” Emmet Fox
However, the approach taken with The Method, while very similar, has a different emphasis.
The Method suggests taking a time honored prayer or mantra such as the Lord’s Prayer or AUM. The reason for this is very simple.
The power of any given prayer or mantra is accumulative. This is true both collectively and individually.
Therefore, selecting an established prayer or mantra that has behind it the force and power of thousands of years of repetition is more effective than even the best constructed Treatment.
The next step in the process, that is silently repeating the prayer or mantra and sticking with it, i.e., not changing from one prayer or mantra to the next, establishes its own accumulative power.
The power achieved by the selection and repetition of a prayer/mantra is not to be underestimated. The results are subjective but very real and tangible. It is something that one can only experience for themselves.
The next step in this process is to use an Affirmation. An affirmation is a positive statement of Truth.
The use of an Affirmation is the ability to focus a Higher Power on a specific area of our life that is causing us difficulty and creating stress. The correct way to do this is in terms that are as broad as possible. The intention is to create a context at a higher level that allows our good to manifest from either known or unknown channels.
It is critical that you do not prescribe the specifics of either what you want or how it is to be achieved. In the New Thought Movement this is referred to as outlining.
Outlining is dangerous for a couple of reasons:
1/ The fact is that some of what we desire stems from our own neurosis. If this is the case, then what we want may not be healthy or what is best for us.
For example, you may want a large sum of money and picture yourself winning the lottery. This is absurd on so many levels that it is difficult to know where to begin.
a/ not everyone can win the lottery…
b/ like the tale of the Monkey’s Claw, it is impossible to know the ramifications would be from the sudden influx of wealth (a significant number of lottery winners are broke within a year or so).
c/ the ground work has not been laid for sudden wealth. Individuals that go out and work and make huge sums of money usually do so over time. The other aspects of their lives are given the opportunity to grow with the increase of income.
2/ By picturing or visualizing a specific outcome we severely limit the Universe/God/Infinite Intelligence/Higher Power to provide the necessary channel for our good to manifest. This channel can be one that is known to us or one that we previously could not imagine. In most instances, if is the latter rather than the former.
An example of a good Affirmation for wealth might be:
“My supply is continuous and unending, I am never closed to it. Prosperity circulates though my life freely. I am healed of all thoughts of difficulties in finances. I rejoice in the consciousness that God has given me access to inexhaustible spiritual substance. I am prosperous because I know God. I am demonstrating prosperity because there is nothing within me to deny it.”
A possible Affirmation for healing would be as follows:
“God created me to express a full and happy life. Every second of every day spiritual energy flows through every cell, organ, muscle, tissue and fiber of my being, revitalizing and renewing me. I do not allow symptoms or medical terms to alarm me. I am filled with the spirit of health. I make positive statements about my health. I am complete and whole because the spirit of God fills me with ever-renewing life.”
This is how the process works when using The Method…
a/ Sit, repeat the prayer/mantra, enter the Silence…
b/ Silently state the affirmation!
That’s it, the whole formula in a nutshell. The only thing left is to give a fair trial and prove to yourself that it works in your life.

I have been using the Method for several weeks now. I have definitely noticed the silence. It feels calming and sort of heavy at the same time. It has been a challenge in that my mind keeps throwing random thoughts into my mantra. As you suggest I try to gently go back to the mantra. Is this my subconscious just resisting? I also am using the affirmation “Health, Wealth, Success.” Is this too broad? Thanks. I really am enjoying this!
John
Hi John,
Nice to hear from you. Thanks for taking the time to write.
To answer your first question, yes, your subconscious mind is resisting. In some ways, it feels threatened and will put up one hell of a fight. Ancient texts report mystics witnessing a myriad of visions to tempt them with worldly rewards. Come to think of it, Jesus had such an ordeal Himself.
As for the affirmation that you’re using: It would not be my first choice. Without the benefit of an initiation from an experienced meditator, my first choices would be either the Lord’s Prayer, AUM or simply ‘God is with me’. Also, anything time tested from any spiritual heritage (please note, I did not say religion).
I’m pleased to hear about your progress. Keep up the good work.
Best wishes,
Scott
Thanks Scott. I appreciate the feedback. I actually am using The Lords Prayer for my mantra. My question was whether the “Health, Wealth, Success” would be appropriate as affirmation once I am in the Silence? Thanks again!
John,
Sorry for the misunderstanding. Don’t wish to be a stick in the mud, but I’m still not crazy about it.
Honestly, the Lord’s Prayer should pretty much accomplish everything that you desire and more. Think about it. The reason that we desire these things is that on some level they’re already real to us. Take you foot off the hose and chances are that your ‘Good’ will flow to you.
Is this always the case. Absolutely not. Everyone is at their own level of growth. Everyone requires their own lessons. Jesus expressed it beautifully: “…your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”
Yes, one can specifically work on particular areas of their life. One can manifest money, companionship and health. Here’s the question…
What’s best for me? Am I in a position to know? Probably not.
The story of Job in the Old Testament is a perfect example of one who worships (prays/meditates) without seeking anything specific. In the end, after his ‘stuff’ has been cleared out, he is rewarded for his persistence. We can achieve heaven on earth; i.e., perfection, simply by rising in consciousness.
Hope this is helpful.
Best,
Scott
Thanks for posting this as you said a few days back when replying to one of my comments / post. I strongly believe based on what I read and also based on my own experience repetition of Mantra (Not mechanically but with full heart and soul) plays a key role, and as mentioned in the “The Teachings of the Masters of the Far east”, Love the GOD with full heart (As per the Method this is noting but repetition of Mantra), The secret lies in getting the at-one-ment in that moment affirm and don’t ask it again and again. In a nutshell always be in the Silence and affirm the specific if required and again go back to the silence or the chanting mode. Sometimes I also feel asking/affirming itself is not required. Would like to know your thoughts on this.
Strictly speaking, asking/affirming is not required.
There are two steps in meditation. There is the meditation which we perform at the beginning, which is strictly mechanical. And then there is a state of consciousness, Meditation which is effortless. One, by its very nature precedes the other.
